What do I need to do to get my website to have a high search engine ranking?
It is important that you work on all factors if you want to get high search engine rankings. It is not enough to focus on just one or two of the above items. Why do I need to optimize my web pages for search engines? There are billions of web pages on the Internet. It’s obvious that not all of them can be listed in the top 10 results on search engines. Search engines only list web sites that they find relevant to a special topic. You must make sure that your web site is such a site. If search engines cannot find out that your web site is about security equipment, per se, they cannot give your web site high rankings for that keyword. The process of optimizing your web pages so that search engines find them relevant is called search engine optimization (SEO). Why do I have to optimize more than just the first page of my website? Search engines, especially Google analyze the content of other web pages on your site to ensure that your web page is really relevant. This means that you should optimize different pages of your web site for different but related search terms. The more pages of your website are optimized for keywords about a special topic, the more likely it is that you will get high rankings for a special keyword that is related to that topic. What is the difference between search engines and Internet directories? Search engines use indexing software programs, called robots or spiders. These software programs are programmed to constantly crawl the web in search of new or updated pages. Internet directories do not use indexing software programs. If you submit your web site to an internet directory, your web site will be indexed by real people who decide whether to include your website or not. Directories are usually subdivided into categories and you have to submit your URL under the most appropriate heading. If you don’t, it is very likely that your web site won’t be listed. What is unethical search engine optimization? Some search engine optimization companies and software developers use unethical techniques and tricks to artificially boost the search engine rankings of a website. This dilutes the quality of search results and calls into question the accuracy of search results. For this reason, the search engines are continuously trying to counter the spam techniques which webmasters might be using and penalize or ban them. They continue to reconstruct their algorithms to prevent spammers from flooding the results page with irrelevant or low quality content. If you use a web site promotion tool that uses these unethical techniques, you will put your web business at severe risk. Can SEO companies guarantee high rankings? Some SEO companies guarantee that you will get a special search engine position if you let them do the work for you. Actually, this is not possible. No company can guarantee search engine listings. If a company makes such promises, take a closer look at the small print. The catch is often that the company selects the search terms. You will be listed for obscure search terms that nobody searches for. What is considered spam in a web page? Most search engines consider the following as spam: Cloaking- the web server returns different pages for search engine spiders and web surfers. Doorway pages- pages with very little context and lots of repeated keywords that spam the index of a search engine by inserting results for particular phrases with the purpose of sending you to a different page. Misleading redirections Hidden Text- text that has a color that is very similar to the background color, text in very small font sizes, text that has been hidden with CSS tags. If you or your SEO consultant are using any of the above techniques on your web pages, remove them now. You might get short term results with them but it is extremely likely that search engines will ban your site if you continue to use them. How do I choose the right keywords for my website? Use focused and targeted keyword phrases that are common enough so the web searcher will use them, but selective enough that they won’t return millions of matches. Very specific keywords generate highly qualified, targeted traffic that increases your sales. The first step in choosing the right keywords is to make them very specific. Also use keyword phrases that consist of two to four words, since most people use phrase instead of just one word when performing a search for a product or service. Avoid using the most popular keyword because you will be competing with millions of other pages for attention of a search engine. It is unrealistic to think that a new website could rank above a site that has been on the Internet for several years. Why is the right keyword density important? Some search engines penalize web sites that use the same keyword over and over on their pages to get a high ranking for that keyword. This is called keyword stuffing. This might happen by mistake if you overuse your most important keyword on your pages and could lead to your website being banned. On the other side, not using your keyword enough in your page could reduce the relevancy of your page and get your page a lower ranking. What are some generalized optimization tips for my website? ~ Don’t use frames ~ Avoid using lots of flash and other multimedia elements ~ Don’t use welcome pages ~ Avoid dynamically created web pages ~ Make sure that you allow search engine robots to index your site ~ Make sure that search engine spiders can access your website ~ Avoid special characters in your URL (&, $, =, %,?) ~ Choose a reliable and fast hosting service What is valid HTML code? Most web pages are written in HTML. Every document written in HTML must follow the grammar, vocabulary, and syntax rules associated with HTML. If the rules are not followed, then the HTML code is invalid. If your code is invalid, search engines may not be able to find everything on your page or worse they may not index your page at all and will leave you with a very low search engine ranking. What are the best search engines and directories to submit my website to? Submit your website to all search engines, Internet directories and special interest sites that are related to your website. A listing on the internet directories and search engines can bring your web site very targeted web site traffic. Do not submit your site if the internet directory or special interest site is not related to your site. How often should I submit my website to search engines? In general, it is not necessary to re-submit your web site once a search engine has indexed it. Search engine spiders will automatically come to your web site and find new pages. . If your site has not been indexed, you can re-submit once a month, be sure to keep in mind that some search engines can take 4-12 weeks to index your website. Be sure to re-submit your website if you have made major changes. What is link popularity? Link popularity has become a very important factor for high search engine rankings and is defined as the number of websites that link to your website. The more sites that link to you, the higher your search engine ranking will be. This is because search engines think that your web site must be important if many other sites link to you. Links from related sites have more weight than links from sites that have nothing in common with your site. If the links to your web site include your important keywords in the link text, the effect on your search engine rankings will be much higher. How much content do I need before submitting my site to search engines? Your web site should have at least 6 pages and each page should have at least 200 words. Search engines need text to index web pages, so be sure to add alt. tags to your images. |
